6-8 Year Olds
These classes are an introduction to speech and drama.
We use drama games to help the children feel at ease. They learn that by having fun it is ok to let yourself go & join in with others who are also willing to have fun. We act out stories such as 'The Three Little Pigs' 'Red Riding Hood' 'The little White Bull' 'Owl Babies' etc. We do Action Poems and Tongue Twisters to help us speak more clearly. We use puppets to develop story telling skills. We use mime to fuel their imagination and take them from being a fire breathing dragon to a ninja turtle.
Drama Dynamics in House Exams are an option for this age group. They learn a poem and story'off by heart' and a mime. They also chat with the examiner at the end of their performance.
From ages 7 upwards students may take part in the
Royal Irish Academy of Music exams. For this exam they learn a set poem, story and mime. They also have a discussion with the examiner on their pieces.
8 - 11 Year Olds
In these classes we develop further the skills of clear diction, articulation and acting.
Students choose their own poems from a set syllabus. This is an early introduction to poetry and poets. Students quickly develop a love of poetry and of saying their poems aloud.
At this level the students may write their own short stories or select a retelling of stories from playwrights such as Wilde, Shakespeare or Old Irish Legends.
Mime is also further advanced in facial and body expression learning skills such as mime walks, passing through doors, climbing ladders.
Reading aloud from a book of the students own choosing is also introduced at this level. Skills such as how to hold the book properly, eye contact with the listener & use of voice to make the story come alive are taught.
We are very conscious in Drama Dynamics that many students have special reading needs. We never place pressure on any student to read aloud if they are uncomfortable doing so, We encourage students to put into practice the skills learnt in class to help them overcome any inhibitions they may have in reading aloud to others.
